I find one thing that affects considerably the stability of systems using the U46DJ. The "CPU power state". This is related to power saving at processor level.
Mostly on mobiles, you will see in the BIOS menu, the option: "CPU power state", you have to choose "DISABLED" for this option, it will be less power efficient, but in return this will get your sound free of audio drops and pops and glitches (from 60 to 100%free as I saw in my tests on different systems)

I've also found that on my WinXP machine, just going to the
Control Panel --> Power Options --> and choosing Power Scheme "Always On" really helps in eliminating audio dropouts, regardless of the sound card I'm using with Ms Pinky.
