jittery sound when playing quicktimes

Post by bren » Tue Mar 28, 2006 2:52 pm

Posted this problem last year and even with the new externals we're still getting jittery audio when playing Quicktime movies with either max-patch or anything we've built in Max. Different audio compression settings seem to make some difference but doesn't solve it. Video plays fine.

Anybody any ideas? We're desperate to try and solve this issue - it's driving us nuts and holding up the project we're working on.

Thanks.

Export the soundtrack to an audio file

Post by dlpinkstah » Tue Mar 28, 2006 10:41 pm

Due to some unfortunate limitations of QuickTime (as created by Apple) and Max/MSP/Jitter (created by Cycling-'74), the only way to get really clean smooth sound when scratching a QuickTime movie using Max/MSP/Jitter and/or Maxi-Patch is to export the movie's soundtrack to an audio file in either .WAV, .AIFF, or .MP3 format. Then in Maxi-Patch, load the QuickTime movie, select "synch to audio file" from the popup menu inside the QT movie player region, and set the "vol" control value to 0.0. Then load the corresponding audio file into the audio file player directly below the QT movie player. Now, when you play the audio file under control of your Ms Pinky vinyl, it automatically causes the movie to play in synch with the sound. I realize this is a bit of a nuisance, but for now we'll just have to live with it.

NOTE: Sometimes you also have to hit the stop button "||" in the QT movie player a second time after selecting "synch to audio file" in order for it to work right.
