hi, i'm still (while saving the money) looking for a hardware interface for ms pinky. right now, i'm still thinking the esi u46dj is the only way to go.

But are there any new (cheaper) products that can keep up with it?

nothing cheaper id say, the esi is pretty cheap anyway. its not ideal but at least it does the job

ok. i just got the esi. just 99 euros at www.thomann.de
