Question | The files are played backwards…

Problem:

Running a 4th generation Ms.Pinky Vinyl and/or a Torq Control using the new Maxi-Patch 3.6.9
aswell the 3.6.8 my soundfiles get played backwards but I have not selected the option within
Maxi-Patch. (Note: I started all over from scratch with mspinky.)

Specification of my full setup:

My left Turntable: Technics SL-1210MK5 (with Ortofon Pro S System)
is plugged to a Berhinger PP400 Preamp which is plugged to a MOTU 828
which is plugged to my Rane TTM56 Mixer.

My right Turntablie: Technics SL-1200MK2 (with Ortofon Pro S System)
is plugged to a Berhinger PP400 Preamp which is plugged to a MOTU 828
which is plugged to my Rane TTM56 Mixer.

The MOTU 828 (Firewire) is connected to my 15" MacBookPro (2.5Ghz with 4GB RAM running OSX 10.5.5)
The Rane TTM 56 Mixer is connected to my pair of Behringer Truth B2030A Active Speaker.

Following screenshot gives a overview of what the settings are.

The performance is not yet tested, cause I would like first to get this issue solved. (Note: The option
"file reverse" is choosen = Sound goes normal)

Suggestions?

I suspect you simply need to switch the left/right inputs from your turntables. Everything else looks good.

One more thing-- why not try reducing the I/O Vector Size (under Audio settings) to something more like 128 or 256? That should make your scratching latency a lot lower.

About the I/O Vector Size and the Signal Vector Size.

In your Quick_Start.pdf you mention to set the values within 128 + 256.
I thought to set these values highest possible - to reach the lowest latency
possibe. Therefore I don't seem to understand the settings.

Funny thing about the file reverse combined with vinyl control is following.
If you play the file reverse and change between vinyl control on / off you
here little "clicks" in the sound when vinyl is controlling. There are no "clicks"
without controlling. Why funny? Because with "normal sound" you don't here
any differences… o.O ??

My needs on the Maxi-Patch

I would to like to have the best possible settings for hardcore scratchings.
I do know that with TimeCode I always will have some latency but how low
can the latency be? Is there some kind of script were I can read out the latency?
I do have MaxMSP/Jitter 5.0.5. Hope you can help me.

MIDI vs TimeCode

In exchange with Mudo we have discussed this issue about latency and
I would like to get a clearer view on that. Maybe you have some ideas.
(And yes I did read your nicely thread with mudo… ^^)

The smaller the I/O Vector Size, the LOWER the latency. I/O Vector Size is just the number of samples in each Input/Output sample buffer. We want to keep that as low as possible, but if it goes too low then the processor will choke. So I recommend usually 128 or 256 for this setting.

The clicks are from the file cueing back to where it needs to be to keep up with the position of the needle. However, when you have file reverse on, the file is always playing backwards. So it is always getting out-of-synch with the position of the needle playing on the record, and so has to re-cue constantly. That's why you hear those clicks.

As above, set the I/O Vector size to the lower possible value that you can before you see and hear the processor start to choke. So start at I/O Vector Size of 128, then lower it gradually. You should be able to detect that scratching gets tighter the smaller the I/O Vector Size.

As I "feel" ¿Left and right channel are playing in oposed directions?

What are the differences about different "surcos" in torq (or Ms. P) vinyl?
